Funding Education
In Ecuador, primary education is compulsory for all children; however, with limited placement opportunities and dwindling funds for public schools, many families send their children to private schools. Despite government efforts to keep education affordable for everyone, the rising costs of uniforms, school supplies, and matriculation fees create a burden on families who want to send their children to school. The constitution mandates children to be in school from ages six to fourteen, but the Ministry of Education reports that a quarter of students drop out during the transition from primary to secondary school, and more students will leave school after their first two years of high school. Many must leave school because they cannot afford the costs of uniforms, supplies, and fees while others must work in order to help provide for their own families.
COVID-19 worsened dropout rates throughout the country as families struggled to provide internet and digital devices for their children’s studies. In the communities where Sasi Muskui Runa is present, many parents had to take out loans or finance computers, smartphones, or tablets to keep their children in classes virtually. Now, they must find the money to send their kids back to school again. Thanks to generous donations to our foundation, the 30 school-age children of the community were able to return to classes this school year. We were able to give $200 to each family per child to help defray the costs. When children feel empowered by education, it can lead to poverty reduction, promote connection across borders, and provide students with a sense of accomplishment and greater responsibility. Thank you to all who donated and keep checking our website for more opportunities to help and get involved.
